Sailing Beyond the classroom: Embracing the freedom of educating at sea

One piece of advice we want to share: you do not need to replicate a traditional school environment, especially when your home is the vast expanse of the sea.

For those already accustomed to home educating while sailing, you are well aware of the freedom and flexibility it offers. Learning isn't confined to a desk or a rigid schedule. The world, the endless horizon – is your classroom. From identifying constellations under the starry night sky to studying marine life up close, every moment onboard presents an opportunity for discovery and growth.

Yet, for newcomers embarking on this journey for the first time, it's natural to feel overwhelmed. You might feel stressed to ensure depth of learning, or recreate a classroom atmosphere or adhere to a strict curriculum. But we're here to tell you: let go of those expectations.

Boat schooling is a unique adventure and let’s embrace the freedom it affords. Rather than try and mimic a traditional school setting, focus on nurturing a love of learning and exploration. Encourage your children to follow their interests, whether it's studying Greek mythology, documenting your travels through mapping or learning about marine science.

Remember, learning doesn't have to take place at a desk. Seize the hands-on opportunities that sailing provides.

Amongst the saying goodbyes, leaving land and diving into the new sailing life, it can be reassuring to seek the familiar.
